What is Upsell Plugin?

Upsell Plugin is a WordPress plugin that allows you to sell products or services from your website and turn the buying experience into a sales funnel.

It was created in 2019 by digital marketing expert Eric Davis, the founder of Jaber Marketing.

Although still in it’s infancy, it has received hundreds of positive reviews by digital product creators, funnel builders, internet marketers, and entrepreneurs.

The key differences between Upsell Plugin and other funnel builders is its affordability and lightweightness.

Most funnel building software are based on the SaaS (Software as a Service) model that requires a hefty monthly subscription.

These subscriptions sometimes limits usage like traffic, number of contacts, number of funnels, depending on which package you choose.

However, because Upsell Plugin is a WordPress plugin, there are no limitations to its use at a lower cost for an annual licence.

Comparing to other WordPress funnel plugins, it’s clean and lightweight, works with any pagebuilder, and it doesn’t require WooCommerce.

What Are Funnels? How Sales Funnels Work

A funnel at its most basic level is a checkout process on your website.

It’s made up of a few pages that takes the prospect through the sales process.

The pages are the product or service page (often called a sales page) which provides information about the product or service you’re selling, a checkout page to collect payment, and a thank you page.

A funnel works by offering a cheaper product upfront and then a more expensive product (an upsell) after the checkout. If they don’t purchase the upsell, then you can offer another cheaper product (downsell) on the next page.

This process, when done right, will convert more leads or prospects into buyers because the first product they see for sale is a low cost offer which minimizes risk.

It’s also been proven over time convert more buyers as soon as they make their first puchase.

This increases the AOV and saves the business owner money in the long run, especially if you run ads to your sales pages.

The reason this process is called a funnel is because more people will buy a product at the beginning of the sales process and less people convert the further into the process they go.

So low priced offers equal more people and higher priced upsells equal less people, which can be visualized as a funnel.

Upsell Plugin Features

There are a wide selection of features included in the Upsell Plugin that enable you to create the most comprehensive sales funnels imaginable.

Here are some of the most promising ones.

Sell Subscriptions

Want to sell a subscription? Like an ongoing service or run a membership website?

This could be your answer!

When you create a product with Upsell Plugin, you can choose between a single product purchase or a subsciption where the customer pays on a recurring basis.

You can choose the billing cycle, offer a trial period, and even set up multiple payment plans, which is essential for those selling multiple packages like bronze, silver, or gold, etc.

1-Click Upsells and Downsells

Setup unlimited upsells and downsells to increase the average order value for each purchase a customer makes.

Using upsells and downsells means your customer only inputs their card details once, which creates less friction for them when deciding on the upsell.

Smart Order Bumps

Standard order bumps will display an additional product to the customer order at the checkout, but the Smart Order Bumps feature goes even further.

If the customer doesn’t select the order bump, you can redirect the buyer to a special discount of the order bump based on how the customer interacts at the checkout.

2-Step Forms

A 2-step form does exactly what it sounds like, breaks the form into a 2-step process.

This makes it less overwhelming for potential prospects to purchase something from you when all they have to fill out in the first step is their email address or other essential details, like their name.

Then on the next page, they only have to fill out their billing details.

The psychology behind this is that the first page acts as a micro-commitment, which increases the chances of them converting on the next page.

Digital File Delivery

If you sell a digital download like a PDF, you can upload and attached the file to the product inside the plugin.

The download will then be available as a link from the thank you page, after the sale has gone through.

Dynamic Coupons

Offer your leads a discount coupon when they go through the checkout.

You can also assign coupons dynamically with a special link that automatically activates on the checkout page.

Autoresponder Integrations

Connect the sales process to your favorite autoresponder, there are several options to choose from (see below).

Automatically assign tags to your contacts to better segment and automate your email marketing campaigns.

Calculate Taxes and Validate VAT

Automatically add tax or VAT to the total sale and assign it to the order depending on where the customer is based.

Integrations

The integrations available with Upsell Plugin are one of the key selling points of the plugin.

It seamlessly connects to some of the most popular WordPress plugins to onboard your customers, assign tags for segmentation, grow your email list , and even set up an affiliate program.

Here are the integrations currently available:

  • LearnDash
  • Wishlist Member
  • LifterLMS
  • MemberPress
  • AffiliateWP
  • iDevAffiliate
  • Zapier

Email marketing solutions integrations include:

  • FluentCRM
  • ActiveCampaign
  • ConvertKit
  • Drip
  • GetResponse
  • Mailchimp
  • MailerLite

The team at Upsell Plugin are continuously adding more integrations to create the best sales funnel builder for WordPress.

Payment Gateways

Currently, Upsell Plugin integrates with Stripe and PayPal, which are two of the most widely used payment processing services on the internet.

I personally prefer using Stripe as it’s more seamless because the buyer stays on your website the whole time, whereas PayPal shows a popup for the buyer to log into their PayPal account.

Upsells and downsells still work with PayPal, they just aren’t as user friendly as Stripe.

Page Builder Compatability

Unlike other funnel builder, Upsell Plugin utilizes the most popular page builders on the market so you aren’t stuck with one type of page builder.

This is great if you are already using one of the below page builders for standard pages on your site.

Of course, if you don’t use a page builder, you don’t need one as Upsell Plugin works fine with Gutenberg.

Here’s a list of the compatible page builders for Upsell Plugin:

  • Beaver Builder
  • Divi
  • Elementor
  • Thrive Architect
  • Oxygen
  • OptimizePress

Pros – Upsell Plugin Review

What I love most about Upsell Plugin is how much control it gives me. It almost feels like I can build any kind of funnel imaginable.

I also like that it’s a WordPress plugin and that I no longer need to use WooCommerce to sell digital products or subscriptions.

I am able to create a conversion driven buying experience for my prospects that doesn’t feel too salesy, and like they’re being guided through the sale in a helpful way.

Also, it’s super lightweight which won’t slow down your website. This is important for an optimal user experience and SEO benefits.

Cons – Upsell Plugin Review

Probably the biggest downside to Upsell Plugin is that there’s no build-in A/B testing capabilities.

You will need to measure the performance of your funnels using other plugins or tools like Google Analytics and Google Optimize.

One other thing that might put people off is the process of creating a sales funnel isn’t as straightforward as other tools.

It takes a bit of navigating and learning the process (like any tool) when creating funnels.

There’s no drag and drop builder or page to display your funnels in a clear, linear or logical fashion.

I personally think this is what keeps the plugin clean and lightweight.

You have to do some of the logic in your mind to connect all of the pages together, instead of the plugin doing it for you.

Once you get the hang of it though, it’s relatively simple to use.

Upsell Plugin Pricing – How much is Upsell Plugin?

Upsell Plugin starts at $97 for one site licence with no limitations. That means you get every feature included for the lowest point of entry.

If you need more licences, you can opt for a 5 site licence for $197 and a 10 site licence for $397.

These prices are correct at the time of writing as they are running a $50 offer on each licence level.

Upsell Plugin Customer Support

Customer support has been extremely positive and super fast. I have spoken to Eric over email on several occasions with a prompt guidance and feedback on things they’ve been working on.

I was even given an updated version to try out before it was released several weeks ago.

The most recent update includes FluentCRM integration whoch was one of the feature requests I enquired about.

I’ve been really impressed with the turnaround of the plugin updates and support so far.

Conclusion – Upsell Plugin Review

Overall, Upsell Plugin is an excellent sales funnel builder for WordPress.

There’s a good selection of integrations that connect into it such as autoresponders, LMS, and membership plugins.

It also has a lot of powerful features to help you collect more leads and convert more sales.

If you use WordPress and you sell digital products, this is a great alternative to more expensive and heavier plugins that weigh down your website and possibly impact performance.
