Niche Site Project Monthly Update – December 2018

Steve Allen

You know what time it is?

It’s time to publish an update for my niche site project.

It’s been a whole month since I announce my public case study of building a niche website from scratch while sharing the process, successes, and failures on this blog.

In my announcement post I outlined some goals I had for December, some short and long term expectations for my niche site and also which niche my blog is in.

In this post, I’ll be going over the goals I set myself and if I managed to achieve any.

I’ll also be going over the niche website performance throughout December including traffic details, how much content has been created, and whether or not the niche site has made any money…

Let’s get straight into it!

Niche Site December Goals

Here’s what I set out for myself to aim for in December 2018:

  1. Define some affiliate products I can promote on Amazon, Clickbank, direct affiliate programs, ebooks, courses etc…
  2. Research more article ideas (currently only have about 15)
  3. Keyword research for articles
  4. Publish 20 articles (fingers crossed!)
  5. Decide on an ad network and add to the site

How did I do?

Well, I managed to complete all of these except for one… And which one could that be?

You might have guessed it – Publish 20 articles…

That might have been a little bit ambitious for December, what with Christmas, family gatherings and a lot of minced pies! 😉

So instead of publishing 20, I only managed to publish seven. Not exactly what I was hoping for but I’m still happy with the seven posts I did publish. I am writing these myself and having to do a fair bit of research.

I’m also happy with the progress of the other things on my list.

Let’s break down how the rest of the list went:

Define some affiliate products: I did define some products that I can promote, although mostly from Amazon, there are some others that I know of that would be perfect to promote on this site but I still need to do some research on these and apply to their affiliate programs. This will be something I go into this month.

Research more article ideas/keyword research for articles: I had about 15 article ideas at the beginning of last month and I spent a whole day doing keyword research and managed to come up with around 60 new content ideas to write about.

Decide on an ad network and add to the site: This wasn’t particularly important one to implement as my traffic levels are very low, I’m not expecting to make any income from ads just yet but I did implement them on the site regardless just so it’s done.

I chose Media.net for now and also added Zergnet ads. I’ve never used Zergnet before but I wanted to see what sort of content it promotes on this type of niche. This is all experimental at the moment just to see what happens. I also added Amazon Native Shopping ads to my posts as well.

Niche Site Performance and Sales

So unfortunately the site hasn’t yet made any sales but it is very early days and I wasn’t expecting much in the first two months of launching the site.

As for traffic:

So December’s traffic was 92 visits from 41 people and 242 page views.

Something seems a little iffy with the Avg. Session Duration though so this could be that my own traffic isn’t being excluded correctly even though I have added filters to exclude my own traffic.

This is something that I’ll be double checking this month and making sure is set up properly.

Plans for January 2019

It’s a new year and I’m feeling really great at the moment!

In my niche site project announcement post, I mentioned that throughout September and October that I wasn’t feeling myself and struggled to do pretty much anything.

That has definitely changed now and I pretty much feel like a different person. Personal development is something I’ve been really interested in for a few years now but it is really starting to turn into more of a passion so the fact that my niche site is within this niche is something I’m really grateful about.

For January, I’ll mostly be doing the same as I did in December except I want to try and be a little more consistant with putting out content.

I’m going to be a little more conservative and only aim for 10 articles this month as I don’t want to keep disappointing myself by not hitting goals. Other than that, I’d like one of those articles to be a pillar post consisting around 3000-5000 words.

This article will be the foundation of what the majority of the content will be about for the rest of the site and help me define the direction of where I can take the site in the future.

Conclusion

As always, thanks for reading and following along with my niche site project.

  1. Hey Steve, nice to see another web guy taking the plunge into niche/affiliate marketing! I found this site through niche pursuits of course. I think if you stick with it and put in solid effort each month, the success will come. It’s just a matter of persistence and patience. Best of luck!

    • Likewise Ryan, it’s good to hear from other niche site builders in the web dev space!

You’re totally right, persistence and patience is key. All the best to you! 🙂
