You can use it as a workbook where you follow along and create a website from start to finish, or you can choose sections of the book to read that appeal to you to refresh a current site you’re already working on.

The instructions are very well laid out with lots of screenshots so you shouldn’t have trouble finishing the book or getting stuck in any way.

Dr. Williams also has his own website where you can turn to if you want further support and he has a course on Udemy if you want a more interactive learning experience.

It’s a detailed guide with step by step instructions which is perfect for beginners. By the time you’ve finished this book, you’ll be able to build your website and blog and understand the key concepts for generating passive income online.

WordPress All-in-One For Dummies

Lisa Sabin-Wilson is a best selling auhor, speaker and co-owner of WebDevStudios, a web development agency based in Houston, Texas.

This edition of WordPress for Dummies was released in April last year and although it’s nearly a year old it’s certinly packed with everything you need to know about creating websites with WordPress and more.

It truly is an all-in-one superguide with over 850 pages. Even the table of contents takes up 14 of those pages! I would say out of all the books on this list that this one is more suitable for someone who wants to become an expert in the WordPress field, learning more about blogging, SEO, promoting with social media, web design, website security, Google analytics, website maintenance, and much more.

If you want an exhaustive book that covers almost everything there is to know about WordPress then the Dummies series by Lisa is the perfect choice. It’s also up-to-date with Gutenberg too.

HTML, CSS & JavaScript Web Publishing in One Hour a Day, Sams Teach Yourself: Covering HTML5, CSS3, and jQuery (7th Edition)

HTML, CSS & JavaScript Web Publishing in One Hour a Day has you covered with creating web pages, structuring your pages with HTML, using images, designing forms, styling your site with CSS, and covering some basics on Javascript and jQuery.

If you’re anything like me, then one book covering three web languages might not be in-depth enough… *turns to bookshelf with six books on just HTML and CSS* … but, it is definitely a good start for a complete novice and for some people, will do just fine.

This book certainly helped me get my head around how WordPress plugins worked and learn what’s possible if you put your mind to it… When it comes to creating WordPress plugins, you really are only limited by your imagination.

The code is based on WordPress 4.x so you may find it slightly outdated. If you have an up-to-date understanding of PHP and other server-side languages though then this shouldn’t be too much of a problem.
